Mary and Max is the tale of an eight-year-old Mount Waverley girl's correspondence with a middle-aged autistic New York man. It is based on Oscar - Winning Adam Elliot's real-life penpal of 20 years, who lives in the New York borough of Staten Island. They have never met, but Elliot keeps the man's letters in an old wooden chest in his St Kilda apartment.
